The Real Purpose of Building a Contact List

Why are you Building a Contact List?

Though most marketers understand the importance of building a contact list,
they don’t fully understand its purpose and they don’t use their list well.

There’s a right way to put your list to work – and a wrong way.

How you use your contact list is up to you, depending on what you hope to
achieve and how long you want your contacts to stay on your list…

The Wrong Way of Building a Contact List!

Most marketers believe that their immediate goal with building a contact list is
to start generating sales.

Generating sales is the ultimate outcome that you are looking for, but something
else must happen first.

If you really want to be successful building a contact list, you need to be sure
that you do things in the right order.

Going for the sale is the last thing you do – not the first, because before
people start buying from you they need to get to know, like, and trust you.

Building a Contact List the RIGHT WAY!

Think about it like this: When your best friend tells you how great a new
movie or new restaurant is – what happens?

You want to go and check it out!

Why is that?

… Because you trust your friend’s judgment.

You know your friend, and like your friend, and you know they know what
they’re talking about.

Most importantly, you trust that they would not intentionally make a bad

And that’s exactly what needs to happen with your contact list before you try to
sell anything to your subscribers.

The people on your list will be more likely to buy from you if they have a
sense that they know you, that you know what you’re talking about and that you
wouldn’t lead them astray.

Now that is not to say that you need to become best friends with every person on
your list – but, you do need to create a sense of familiarity and trust.

You won’t create a sense of trust if you continuously send ads to your list.

But if, on the other hand, you take the time to find out what your contacts need
and want, and send them insightful information that addresses their concerns, you will get their attention.

Is the real purpose of building a contact list clear now?

It’s to help you develop relationships.

The relationship comes first – the sale comes later.

Use your list to foster relationships – to help your subscribers get to know,
like and trust you, because when people know, like and trust you they will want
to check out your recommendations right away.

If you are not using your contact list to develop relationships – you may want
to rethink your strategy for building a contact list.
